From Childrens Books 360, nature was a source of joy for Denise Fleming when she was a child in in Toledo, Ohio.

"I lived in a regular, comfortable neighborhood, and we spent a lot of time outside," she recalls in a chat with The Times.

"I was very much influenced by Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" books. We were pioneers. My grandmother made us bonnets and skirts."

The author and illustrator of "In the Tall, Tall Grass," "In the Small, Small Pond," "Barnyard Banter," "Mama Cat Has Three Kittens," "Beetle Bop" and many more still sees nature as a primary inspiration.

"I hope they'll (children) get an appreciation for nature and want to preserve it when they grow up."
